Scriptorium: Bible Thoughts and Commentary

Romans 8:35

Romans 8:35:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? (NIV)

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (NASB)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (KJV)

Here, Paul argues a third time via anacoenosis. First: “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?” (Rom 8:33) Then: “Who is he that condemns?” (Rom 8:34) Now, he amplifies the argument once again by asking: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Rom 8:35)

This question is the last of the series going back to Rom 8:31, in which he asks “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

In these two questions, it is clear that there is nothing and no one that could separate us from the love of Christ. “God will graciously give us all things.” (Rom 8:32)
