Scriptorium: Bible Thoughts and Commentary

Romans 8:36

Romans 8:36:

As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” (NIV)

Just as it is written, “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.” (NASB)

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. (KJV)

Here, Paul adds to the argument of Rom 8:18: “All our sufferings in the present life are unequal to, less than, and unworthy of the glory to be revealed in us, or that inheritance which has been established in Christ Jesus; therefore, we should gladly suffer anything with Christ that we may be also glorified along with him, and in him become heirs of God.” The thrust of Rom 8:18–35 is assurance of the greatness of God’s glory yet to be revealed in his heirs.

Now, Paul proves this same issue via testimony from the old testament, specifically Psalm 44:22.

The argument: “We face death all day long, we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered (Psalm 44:22); All our sufferings in the present life are unequal to, less than, and unworthy of the glory to be revealed in us, or that inheritance which has been established in Christ Jesus; therefore, we should gladly suffer anything with Christ that we may be also glorified along with him, and in him become heirs of God. (Rom 8:18–36)”
